HARVEST SEASON

September is when Western Colorado starts changing gears. The days can still feel like summer in the valleys, while the high country begins showing the first signs of fall.

It’s the month for orchards, vineyards, mountain drives and one last taste of summer before the real chill arrives.

🍷 MAKE A WEEKEND OF PALISADE

The 35th Colorado Mountain Winefest takes place in Palisade on September 19, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. It brings together Colorado winemakers, grape growers, culinary partners and wine lovers for one of the region’s signature fall events.

Don’t make the trip just about the festival. Spend the rest of the weekend exploring Palisade’s orchards, farms, wineries and back roads.

🍂 THEN HEAD UP THE GRAND MESA

Higher elevations generally change first. Grand Junction’s tourism office notes that the Grand Mesa often reaches peak color around the third or fourth week of September, while lower elevations turn later.

CHASE THE GOLD

October is when Western Colorado earns its reputation.

Aspens turn brilliant yellow. Mountain roads become photography-worthy around practically every corner. Towns slow down, temperatures drop and suddenly a Saturday drive feels like a destination.

🚗 TAKE THE SCENIC ROUTE

Some of the best October drives include:

Dallas Divide → Telluride
Grand Mesa → Cedaredge
Kebler Pass → Crested Butte
Ouray → Silverton
McClure Pass → Marble

But don’t wait for a specific “perfect” weekend. CDOT says 2026 foliage may arrive earlier in some areas because of drought and moisture stress, with central mountain and aspen corridors generally peaking from mid-to-late September, while the San Juans are expected around late September.

🎃 FALL GETS FUN

Grand Junction packs October with classic fall activities. Moon Farm runs Sept. 25–Oct. 31, with hayrides, a pumpkin patch and Halloween attractions. Harvest Illuminated takes over the Western Colorado Botanical Gardens Oct. 22–24, followed by the Downtown Trick-or-Treat Spooktacular on Oct. 24.

🏔️ OURAY TURNS 150

One of the biggest Western Colorado celebrations of 2026 happens in Ouray.

The town’s 150th anniversary will be celebrated October 2–3. Friday brings a gala at the Beaumont Hotel; Saturday features a free concert at Fellin Park with Big Head Todd & The Monsters and Hazel Miller & The Collective.

WEST OF 105 TIP: Go early. Stay late. The best part of a fall road trip is often the town at the end of the road.

SLOW DOWN

November is different.

The brilliant gold begins to disappear, the first real winter weather arrives, and Western Colorado becomes quieter.

That’s exactly why we like it.

This is the month for hot springs, long dinners, mountain-town weekends and doing absolutely nothing for a few hours.

♨️ MAKE IT A HOT-SPRINGS WEEKEND

Build a November escape around a simple formula:

Drive → Soak → Dinner → Hotel → Slow morning

Ouray and Glenwood Springs are natural choices, but the real idea is to pick a mountain town and stay awhile instead of trying to see everything in one day.

✨ THEN THE HOLIDAY SEASON STARTS

Glenwood Springs traditionally kicks off its holiday season at the Hotel Colorado on the Friday after Thanksgiving, with music, Santa, fireworks and thousands of lights. Winter on the Mountain at Glenwood Caverns also begins its holiday season around November.

NOVEMBER MOOD:
Less itinerary. More fireplace.

LET IT GLOW

By December, the gold is gone.

But Western Colorado replaces it with something else: snow-covered mountains, glowing downtowns, local shopping, music and small-town Christmas traditions.

🎄 PALISADE

Olde Fashioned Christmas — December 4–5

Expect a classic small-town holiday atmosphere with lights, carolers, horse-drawn carriages, a winter market, tree lighting and the Parade of Lights.

🎁 TELLURIDE

Telluride goes all-in on the holidays:

Dec. 9: Noel Night
Dec. 12–13: Mountain Village Holiday Prelude
Dec. 24: Christmas Eve Torchlight Parade

It’s the kind of place where you can park the car, walk through town and let the mountains provide the backdrop.

🎶 GRAND JUNCTION

For something a little more urban, the Grand Junction Symphony Orchestra’s Holiday Pops returns to the Avalon Theatre on December 12–13, 2026.

WEST OF 105 TIP: Don’t just visit for an event. Book the night, walk downtown, eat somewhere local and make it a weekend.

You don’t have to wait for summer to explore Western Colorado.

September gives you the harvest. October gives you the gold. November gives you permission to slow down. December turns the whole thing into a postcard.
